8/23/2017: The Northern Michigan product quietly entered the recruiting scene during his junior football season as Central Michigan became the first to offer the OT/TE prospect. Hayes played TE in his high school teams wing-t offense and impressed schools with his athletic abilities.

College interest: From October 2016 to February 2017, Hayes experienced a spike in his recruitment. He committed to Michigan later in the Spring.
